
Américaine, née en 1969 à New York, Nancy Coste étudia la photographie à l’Art Center College of Design de Pasadena.
Attirée très tôt par une carrière internationale, elle collabora avec les plus grands magazines tant dans le domaine du reportage que dans celui de la mode (GQ, Vogue Italy, ELLE, Marie Claire, Le Figaro, Le Monde 2, Arte Magazine…). Sa route la mena ainsi de New York à Paris en passant par Milan et Santiago du Chili.
Photographe officielle de la présidence du Chili depuis 2006, Nancy Coste se vit appelée par le ministère français de la culture à collaborer aux «Rencontres pour l’Europe de la culture » en aménageant un studio dans
l’enceinte de la Comédie Française où elle fit le portrait d’artistes de renom ainsi que de personnalités du monde des arts.
Fascinée par l’art du portrait, Nancy Coste s’est toujours amusée à capturer le regard des gens : inconnus ou non, ses modèles se laissent découvrir dans toute leur pudeur. Parmi ces derniers, citons Jeanne Moreau , Pierre Marcolini (chef chocolatier), Michele Bachelet (Présidente du Chili), Marc Tessier (président de TF1), Louis Schweitzer (PDG de Renault), L’Archiduc Rodolphe d’Autriche , Jacky Ickx, Vivienne Westwood, Claude Lelouche (réalisateur), Marianne Faithful, Patrice Chéreau (réalisateur), ou Luciano Benetton.
La galerie Flore a la chance d’exposer en exclusivité pour la première fois en Europe un vaste choix de photos de l’artiste tant à la BRAFA qu’au sein de son espace bruxellois. Like an anthropologist, Nancy Coste studies human experience, placing special importance on the role of the individual in the group. Highlighting perceptions, both from the inside and the outside, she is drawn to the difficult contradiction of collective consciousness versus individuality; conflict between confidence and lack of confidence. Our desire is to be part of something bigger, but our need to single ourselves out keeps us apart, even if that need is never realized.
Surrounded in joy, tension, silence, each portrait is a study of the intrinsic dichotomy that is in each of us: though a part of society, our inner thoughts, our inner life forever separates us. Even when interacting with our peers, there is always an inner core that remains separate and solitary. We are part of the machine, the team, the group yet we float alone.

MILK
The purpose of the series “Milk” was simply to promote breast-feeding. I have always been befuddled how a woman’s choice to breast-feed touches a nerve in so many people. I believed breast-feeding one’s child, whether it be at home or in public, would be a universally accepted act. This was not my experience. The media bombards us everyday with images of unclad women to sell everything from lingerie to cars. The glimpse of a woman’s breast while feeding her child creates discomfort and is can be perceived as indecent. Breast feeding each of my two children gave me a direct understanding of the beauty of the experience, the bond it creates and the physiological and psychological benefits to both mother and child. Influenced by 18th century painting, I chose to photograph women breast-feeding and capture the grace of this modest and simple act, the act of being a Mother.

Portraits of families nude in the bathroom. I wanted to explore the peace, the silence, the simplicity and the spontaneity of the parent/child relationship. The occasions one passes with their children where we are completely ourselves. I was looking for a moment I felt as a child with my mother and brother. My lens has been graced by at least 50 families. In the watery quietude of the bath, the family’s movements make delicate ripples while the steam creates a curtain of warm mist that smooths out all of life’s imperfections.
Con su ilimitada capacidad para desnudar y desnudarse a través del obturador, la fotógrafa neoyorkina Nancy Coste ha elegido en esta ocasión el agua, recorrer pausadamente el cuerpo húmedo del agua… explorar la ausencia y el pudor desplegados en ese antiguo y secreto espacio del ‘cuarto de baño’. Y ha llamado a sus más cercanos, no sólo para contemplarlos sino para poseerlos, para develar los pliegues de su vulnerabilidad. Como Narciso, Coste se ha obsesionado con la belleza del cuerpo y ha dispuesto como altar nuestra cotidiana fuente de Eros: una tina, una ducha, un espejo… y la ha dejado correr… con la esperanza de capturar por un instante el juego de la inocencia, el rito de purificación del Edén.

« Limpio » est un projet que j’avais en tête depuis des années. Je souhaitais utiliser l’atmosphère particulière de la salle de bain et le pouvoir de l’eau pour faciliter l’expression de la pureté dans les relations humaines, particulièrement au sein d’une même famille.
La relation parent-enfant a spécialement retenu mon attention. A travers l’intimité d’un bain, les rapports sont dépouillés de toute arrière-pensée, le naturel s’exprime paisiblement, les relations sont plus sereines. Les sentiments qui en découlent sont marqués par la douceur et la joie. C’est ce que je souhaitais capturer à travers ce projet.
La nudité est un autre aspect fondamental de « Limpio ». La nudité a souvent été présente dans les allégories de la vérité dans l’histoire de l’art. Dénudés, les membres d’une même famille exposent cette vérité à travers la spontanéité de leurs interactions. Les corps dénudés contribuent à libérer les sentiments et permettent un abandon de soi au profit d’une communion familiale.
L’eau et la lumière ont été les éléments déterminants de « Limpio ». L’eau en tant qu’élément a permis la mise en place de nombreux effets qui m’ont aidé à travailler sur la fluidité, la transparence, et l’immatérialité. L’ondulation a également facilité les jeux de lumière et de réflexion, contribuant à la sensation d’un environnement onirique et symbolique puissant.

When I started this series my objective was to create an accurate and faithful chronicle of life in Kenya, I was interested in the many varied types of people and cultures of the country. My goal was to listen and document the lives of Kenyans; their goals, dreams, wishes, achievements, important moments, stories of their families, antidotes, thoughts, skills, insights anything they felt like sharing. . I also wanted to create a space where Kenyans could share and inspire each other with their experiences, stories and culture.
I encountered many setbacks while making the series, but thanks to the amazing talents and help of Micheal Imusyoki and Edwin Karani the project moved forward. This Series would have never taken place without their talent, support and good humour in translating stories. I also wanted to give my thanks and credit to my amazing assistants Sule Muntari, Joe Wasike , Jackson Laizer, Frank as well as TengeVuli who all helped make this possible.

I started this series carrying around a huge bag of masks and a Graflex camera. How I enjoyed meeting strangers and seeing their reaction to the possibility/ idea of putting on a mask. This was a transcendent experience, a project of deep play. The masks revealed something of the person, it was the sudden transformation from a normal everyday situation to the imaginary.
